21/22 Weeks

I'm am a week behind on posting about Little One, so I am combining this week and last week's post....

21 Weeks

Size:
Baby weighs about10 1/2 ounces, and the length from head to rump is 7 inches, about the length of a spoon. Ten and one-half ounces is also the size bear cubs are when they are born.

Development:
Your baby has begun it's main project for the rest of your pregnancy: putting on weight.
Baby's eyebrows and eyelids are fully developed. Taste buds are forming on it's tongue. The eyelids are sealed, but the eyes are active.

22 Weeks

Size:
Baby is about 7 1/2 inches from crown to rump and weighs between 13 and 16 ounces - about the size of a small grapefruit.

Development:
Baby is entering it's fifth month of existence.
Fingernails are almost fully grown, and the organ systems are becoming more functional and specialized. Baby has a distinct pair of lips, and the first canines and molars are developing from hard tissue below the gum line. Baby now looks like a miniature newborn.
Blood is traveling through the umbilical cord at four miles an hour, fueling growth with oxygen and nutrients.

20 week Ultrasound/Doctor's Appointment

Thursday we had our 20 week doctor's appointment with "the big" ultrasound!
As you can see, Little One has grown a lot since our last ultrasound, and is getting really cute!
I know everyone wants to know the sex, but you are just going to have to wait!

For this appointment, we had the ultrasound first. Little One is already stubborn.....goody! Every time the ultrasound tech would try to get a picture, Little One would move around and away. Needless to say, the tech was getting a little annoyed.....which was kind of ruining the experience, but it was so amazing to see our baby in such detail. Of course this is the ultrasound where they check-out every aspect of the baby. One of Michael's favorite parts was when the tech was checking out the tip of the nose and the nostrils. It's so crazy that you can see all of that!

Little One's heartbeat was 145 bpm.
And by the tech's measurements, Little One weighs around 13 ounces.
And is perfectly healthy in every way!

20 weeks

Little One this week....

Size:
Baby is between 5 1/2 and 6 1/2 inches crown to rump, and between nine and ten inches from head to toe. It weighs about nine ounces. Over the next month, baby will gain about a pound! Right now, baby is about the size of a mango.

Development:
Baby's permanent teeth are already starting to form behind it's baby teeth. These permanent teeth won't be mature for several years.
By this point, baby can move it's eyes, though not always in tandem. What were sweeping left-right eye motions last week are turning into eye rolls that will last through teenage years. (Great!) Eyebrows have formed, and hair is beginning to form on baby's scalp.
From this point on, the baby seems to be able to differentiate between mornings, afternoons, and nighttime and starts to become active at certain times more than others.
Your baby also has all of the neurons in it's brain that it will need.

And tomorrow we have our 20 week doctor's appointment.....which means we get to find out if we are having a boy or girl!

Also, update on me.....
After almost a week of bed-rest, I am feeling much better. The pain is not gone, but it is now tolerable. Yay!

19 weeks and a trip to the E.R.

Let me start this post by saying that Little One is perfectly healthy! It's mommy that is having the issues.....
Wednesday, my pain was getting worse and worse, so I called my doctor's nurse and she suggested that I head in to the E.R. to get everything checked out. So I left work and Michael and I headed to the hospital. We saw a doctor and he wanted to check out my lungs and heart, because the pain was only on my left side. So he ordered a EKG and a CT of my lungs. Luckily for me and baby, everything looked normal, so the doctor decided that it had to be muscular. His thought was that the muscle and tissue in-between my ribs is inflamed and tearing. So he suggested rest and sent me home with prescriptions for a muscle relaxer and a pain killer. Hopefully I can get some rest and help my poor muscles heal!

And now on to Little One.....
Once again, baby is just fine and perfectly healthy!

This week....

Size:
Baby is between five and six inches long and weighs about seven ounces - about the size of an apple.

Development:
If the baby is a girl, early ovaries contain follicles with forming eggs. Soon, half of the genetic material for your potential future grandchildren will be formed.
Pictures of babies at this age show them touching the membrane of the amniotic sac, touching their own faces, reaching for the umbilical cord, pedaling their legs, and sucking their thumbs. Your baby may already have a preference for the left or right hand.
In the brain, areas of nerve cells that serve the senses of touch, taste, smell, sight, and hearing are becoming specialized and are forming more complex connections.
Loud sounds as well as any feelings you may have of stress of alarm may be communicated to the baby. The baby responds to these stresses by becoming more active.

Now we are looking forward to next week when we get to find out the sex!
